Passport
A passport is an official travel document issued by a government that contains a person's identity for international travel. A person with a passport can travel to and from foreign countries more easily and access consular assistance. A passport certifies the personal identity and nationality of its holder.
Many nations issue (or plan to issue) biometric passports that contain an embedded microchip, making them machine-readable and difficult to counterfeit.
A biometric passport (also known as an electronic passport, e-passport or a digital passport) is a traditional passport that has an embedded electronic microprocessor chip, which contains biometric information that can be used to authenticate the identity of the passport holder.
The currently standardized biometrics used for this type of identification system are facial recognition, fingerprint recognition, and iris recognition.
(In some countries, for example, in Russia, the passport refers to an identification document, and the international passport refers to the document used for traveling abroad.)
Passport Validity Requirements
For residence permits issued for employment purposes, the passport must be valid for at least three months beyond the intended duration of stay. In the case of residence permits for family reunification, the passport must be valid until the end of the intended period of stay. Passports issued for a period exceeding 10 years are not accepted by the authorities.
If the passport expires earlier than the intended duration of stay, the applicant must decide whether to renew the passport before submitting the application or accept that the validity of the residence permit will be limited accordingly.
It is important to be aware of the processing time for passport renewal and to carefully consider whether to proceed with the current passport — resulting in a residence permit issued with a shorter validity — or to wait for the new passport, which may delay the issuance of the permit.
For applications submitted in Hungary, the application process can be initiated with a passport that is nearing expiration, provided that the applicant informs the authority that the issuance of a new passport is in progress. The new passport must be submitted to the authority before the decision on the application.
